Diving the Red Sea!

The Red Sea is a bucket list item for most scuba divers and for us it was no exception! We had almost 3 weeks total planned in Egypt with our first stop being one week on a liveaboard diving the Red Sea!

We were flying in from Italy so we had our connecting flight into Cairo then the final stop was Hurghada. We had one night at the The Hilton Hotel which we arrived at in the evening and had no idea how beautiful the view was from our room until we woke up the next morning!

First night in Hurgada before heading to the boat!

We had a driver pick us up the next morning early so we really didn’t get to enjoy the hotel because we had about a 4 hour drive to get to Port Ghalib where we would be boarding the boat! There are options to fly into Marsa Alam but we were advised that option can be tricky as flights are very often changed or canceled so we opted for the drive instead.

Once we arrived to Port Ghalib we boarded the Sea Serpent Glorious Miss Nouran!

When planning a trip to the Red Sea you first have to decide which area you plan on visiting. There are two general areas of the Red Sea those being the North and the South regions. The North region is where you will find the more famous wreck dives but our itinerary was the South region which included dive sites around the Fury Shoals.

The Fury Shoals make up several reefs along the Southwest Red Sea coast, offering amazing scuba diving opportunities with some of the most pristine reefs in Egypt. The hard and soft coral are unspoiled and are a highlight of many dive sites such as the Fury Shoal Garden. This area is said to be great diving spot if you want to avoid the crowded dive sites of the Northern Red Sea and if you are looking for nice reefs and coral. What we learned was that even the southern dive sites can be crowded! (As seen on the video below)

The water temperature was great and we were able to just dive in our rash guards and dive skins most of the time. We only pulled out our 3mm wetsuits a couple of times and there was plenty of fish life and coral and while the fury shoals was mostly shallow reef dives, there were several dives where we saw some bigger fish life like sharks and even manta rays!

Unfortunately my go pro waterproof casing had issues and I was unable to have very much footage from this dive trip but what I found was sometimes dives are even more enjoyable without the focus being on the camera and trying to get the perfect video or photo!

One thing for sure is that the sunsets we had during our trip were spectacular!
